Discomfirmation and confirmation
Disconfirmation is ignoring someone's presence as well as that person's messages
Confirmation is in contrary of Disconfirmation. It involves your acknowledging the presence of the other person, the person's importance and your acceptance of this person
Racism
Anything that is said or written that makes a race to look inferior to another race
A few guidelines for racist messages
- make sure not to refer to race when it's irrelevant
-avoid attributing economic or social problems to the race of the individual
-avoid interacting with members of other races through stereotypes perpetuated by the media
Heterosexist
Involve attitudes and behavior that disparage gay or lesbian as well as a belief that all sexual behavior that is not heterosexual is unnatural and deceiving of criticism and condemnation
A few suggestion for avoiding heterosexist
-avoid offensive nonverbal mannerisms that parody stereotypes
-avoid complimenting gay and lesbian
-avoid making assumption
-avoid denying individual differences
Ageism
Ageism refer to prejudice against other age groups. Discrimination based on age usually signifies discrimination the old.
-avoid talking down
-speak at normal volume
-engage older people in conversation as you would wish to be engaged
Sexism
To practice or support favoritism that criticizeds or having a bias towards a specific gender
-avoid using man generically
-stay away from sex-role stereotypes
Cultural identifiers
Used in talking to and about members of different cultures language that is free of sexism,heterosexist,racism,sizeism or ageism
Affectional orientation
Refer to gay is the preferred term to refer to a man who has an affectional orientation toward other men, and lesbian is the preferred term for a woman who an affectional orientation toward other women
Age and sex
Older people refer to elder,elderly,senior or senior citizen
Term girl should be used to refer to a very young female and is equivalent to boy
Woman and young woman is preferred

Extensional orientation is tendency to look first at the actual people,object

Factual statement-must be made by the observer after observation and must be limited to what is observed

Static evaluation is tendency to retain evaluation without change while the reality to which they refer is changing

Polarization
Tendency to look at the world in terms of opposites and to describe it on extremes
